Auto's en vrachtwagens die op benzine of diesel rijden, komen er na 2025 waarschijnlijk niet meer in in Noorwegen. Ook de eigen bevolking moet dan geheel overgestapt zijn op alternatieven zoals elektrisch vervoer.
Er lijkt een meerderheid in het parlement te zijn voor het verbod op auto's die op schadelijke brandstoffen rijden. De Noorse overheid wil zo de klimaatverandering bestrijden.

Het verbod staat benoemd in het Nationaal Vervoer Plan. Ook de transportsector moet veranderen. Na 2030 moeten alle nieuwe schepen en veerboten emissievrij zijn.

De aanschaf van elektrische auto's wordt met belastingvoordelen al gepromoot in Noorwegen. In geen enkel ander Europees land worden zoveel elektrische auto's verkocht, afgezet tegen het aantal inwoners. 15 procent van alle nieuw geregistreerde personenauto's rijdt op elektriciteit.
