Probiotics do not reduce the risk of intestinal infections in premature babies
, scientists found no evidence that the use of probiotics reduces the risk of intestinal infections in premature babies. However, a significant difference was found in children who were breastfed.
This is the result of a new treatment in the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, writes NRC Handelsblad. The results of the treatment are described Monday in Scientific Reports.
Children eight weeks, roads often are born prematurely less than a kilo. This makes them vulnerable and are at high risk of inflammatory bowel disease that can be fatal them.
Preventive effect
of the babies who received a bacterium paste during the investigation, received 5.1 percent of an intestinal infection. Of the babies who did not paste, 7.8 percent had an appendicitis. The differences were, however, on the breast-feeding infants, not significant.
An intestinal inflammation is probably generated by an incorrect balance of bacteria in the gut. The administration of probiotics, or "good" bacteria to children, might work preventively.
