'Majority Android devices affected by new vulnerabilities'
Security Researchers have found four new vulnerabilities in the Android operating system. The majority of Android devices are vulnerable to 'QuadRooter' problem.
All Android devices can be made with a chip of the US Qualcomm by malicious software that exploits the QuadRooter problem, cyber security company, Checkpoint reports after a presentation at hacker conference Def con.
Almost all current Android devices sold in the Netherlands are equipped with a Qualcomm chip. Include Samsung, LG, HTC, Sony and Motorola make smartphones with Snapdragon chips from Qualcomm.
Fraudulent apps could exploit the vulnerability QuadRooter to get so-called "root access" to a device. This attackers gain access to all the data on a device, and they can also easily listen to him.
Installing
within the Google Play app store is malicious software usually prohibited or quickly removed, but apps with malware often spread outside of Google Play. To install these apps, users of Android devices have to change a security setting.
Unlike other malicious software have an app with the QuadRooter malware to apply for special permission, for example, to view private files or the location of a user .
Updates
Qualcomm has already solved the problem and software patches passed to Google. In the monthly security updates Android have already closed three of the four leaks, but many smartphones and tablets get those updates late or not at all. Many devices have been released in the past year, each month get the latest security updates.
"No one now has a device that is completely safe," Checkpoint onderzsoeker Michael Shaulov warns against ZDNet. He says, frustrated by the complicated process of updating Android, where both Qualcomm and Google and smartphone manufacturers are involved.
