Nederlanders zijn roken in het open

Nederlanders zijn roken in het openbaar in de laatste tien jaar steeds minder sociaal acceptabel gaan vinden.
Vooral jongeren hebben in toenemende mate moeite met rookgedrag. In jonge leeftijdsgroepen daalde de acceptatie sneller dan in hogere leeftijdscategorieën.

Onderzoekers van de Universiteit van Maastricht deden tien jaar lang onderzoek. In totaal werden 180.000 Nederlanders bevraagd.

Met name in het openbaar vervoer en op scholen wordt roken afgewezen. Roken op deze plekken is in Nederland dan ook verboden. Ook roken in de auto bij niet-rokers vinden relatief veel Nederlanders onacceptabel.

Cafés
Opvallend is dat roken in cafés minder massaal wordt afgewezen, hoewel het ook daar verboden is om te roken. "Roken in café's blijft vrij acceptabel voor veel Nederlanders. Dit kan komen door de regelmatige wijzigingen in de wetgeving rond roken in cafés", aldus onderzoeksleider Karin Hummel.

De onderzoekers vroegen mensen ook naar hun mening over roken op plekken waar dat wel is toegestaan: op het terras en op straat. "De mening van Nederlanders over roken op straat is redelijk stabiel gebleven. Op terrassen is de acceptatie licht gedaald."

Thuis roken
Ook roken in huis kan op steeds minder goedkeuring rekenen, zowel onder rokers als niet-rokers. In 2005 was roken in 62 procent van de huishoudens met jonge kinderen niet toegestaan. In 2014 was dit percentage gestegen naar 77.

Onder rokers steeg het percentage dat binnenshuis een rookverbod heeft in die periode van 43 naar 55 procent.
