Australian city fights mites on bees with helium balloons
A group of biologists in the Australian city of Townsville used large white helium balloons filled with pheromones to capture Asian honeybees.
The balloons are primarily intended to lure these bee species and investigate, ABC News reported Friday. This species Varroa mites can carry with them.
The worst kind of this mite can cause other assembled colonies appearing in Townsville die within three to four years by mites eat bee larvae.
In particular, the European honeybee, which ensures the most honey in Australia, suffering from the mites.
mutation
Although the mites that hitherto bee found in the Australian city are not the deadliest varoamijtsoort, fear scientists that the species will eventually mutate.
"Actually we use essentially a large helium balloon with a sort of fishing line out with female bee pheromone that attracts male bees, "says researcher Ashley Bunce, at ABC News. "So people should not be alarmed if people see them. It is only a method of investigation."
If the bees are caught, they are placed in ethanol and tested whether they carry with them the mite. Can also be determined from which the basket is derived so that can be taken, if any additional measures.
