De gemiddelde woordenschat van een volwassene bedraagt ongeveer 42.000 woorden, zo blijkt uit een nieuwe studie.
Mensen met een zeer grote woordenschat kennen ongeveer 52.000 woorden, terwijl mensen die weinig taalvaardigheid hebben slechts 27.000 woorden gebruiken.

Iedereen blijft echter nieuwe woorden leren tussen het twintigste en zestigste levensjaar: gemiddeld één per twee dagen.

Dat melden Belgische onderzoekers in het wetenschappelijk tijdschrift Frontiers in Psychology.

De wetenschappers kwamen tot hun bevindingen doormiddel van een online taaltest die werd gemaakt door bijna een miljoen mensen.

Alle deelnemers aan de test werden geconfronteerd met honderd woorden (zeventig bestaande woorden en dertig verzonnen begrippen) De proefpersonen moesten zo snel mogelijk aangeven welke woorden ze kenden en welke woorden volgens hen niet bestonden.
