"Average vocabulary of an adult amounts to 42,000 words,"
The average vocabulary of an adult is about 42,000 words, according to a new study.
People with very large vocabulary recognize about 52,000 words, while people who have little proficiency only use 27,000 words.
Everyone However, it remains new words learning between twenty and sixty years of age: on average one every two days.
That report Australian researchers in the journal Frontiers in Psychology.
English
the scientists arrived at their findings by means of an online language test which was made by almost a million people .
All participants in the test were faced with a hundred words (seventy existing words and thirty invented concepts) the subjects had ASAP indicate which words they knew and what words did not exist at them.
so far the scientists base their conclusions on the average vocabulary only on the performance of English speaking participants. However, they have also been carried out small-scale experiments with similar tests in Spanish and Dutch.
Familiarity
The new study says, according to lead researcher Marc Brysbaert of the University of Ghent is not only about the average vocabulary of people. With data from the study, the scientists also calculated how much adults learn words on average per day. Further, it provides insights into the rate at which people respond to different words.
"In our studies in the Dutch example, we saw that people respond much more quickly to words that know all the speakers of the language, words that only 95 percent of the population knows, "said Brysbaert on news Phys.org.
also for future language research is the study of interest, emphasizes the Belgian. "I can imagine that investigators about a hundred years will be very interested in our data, because they can see how the English language has evolved by that time with them.
