Aanpak eenzaamheid bij ouderen volgens deskundigen niet efficiënt

De door de overheid gefinancierde programma's om eenzaamheid onder ouderen te bestrijden werken niet. Twee hoogleraren en een ouderenarts pleiten in NRC voor een andere aanpak.
8 procent van de Nederlanders is volgens onderzoek structureel eenzaam, een groot deel van die groep is oudere. In 2013 werd volgens NRC bijna een miljoen euro uitgegeven aan een programma om dit probleem tegen te gaan en wordt er jaarlijks 150.000 euro besteed aan een samenwerking van zorg- en welzijnsorganisaties.

In verschillende gemeenten kunnen eenzame mensen bellen met een meldpunt, of gaan er vrijwilligers langs de deur. Volgens hoogleraar sociologie Jenny Gierveld werkt dit niet.

"De karakteristiek van mensen die zich eenzaam voelen is juist dat ze zich terugtrekken. Dan ga je echt niet de telefoon pakken om te vertellen dat je eenzaam bent. Zulke initiatieven werken vaak zelfs averechts."

Verkeerd idee
De initiatieven gaan volgens de drie deskundigen uit van een verkeerd idee. Hoogleraar ouderengeneeskunde Joris Slaets zegt in de krant dat georganiseerd, professioneel contact eenzaamheid niet kan tegengaan. "Het heeft een heel andere emotionele connotatie dan een persoonsrelatie. Alleen een echte, liefdevolle relatie met een naaste neemt eenzaamheid weg.”

Volgens de deskundigen is een "convooi" van mensen nodig om de eenzaamheid tegen te gaan. "Familieleden, vrienden, maar ook mensen om alleen gezellig koffie mee te drinken.
