Het aantal sim-only-telefoonabonnementen is de afgelopen flink gegroeid in Nederland, vooral ten koste van prepaid.
Het percentage abonnementen inclusief smartphone bleef de afgelopen jaren nagenoeg gelijk. Dat berekende GSM Helpdesk op basis van doorlopend onderzoek van het Consumer Panel van Telecompaper.

De stijging in sim-only abonnementen gaat daarmee vooral ten koste van prepaid. Het percentage ondervraagden met een prepaid simkaart daalde tussen 2012 en 2016 van 15 naar 12 procent. En het aandeel dat een pakket met telefoon en prepaid-simkaart kocht daalde van 12 naar 6 procent.

In totaal is het aandeel prepaid-gebruikers in Nederland daarmee met 18 procent half zo groot als het het aandeel sim-only-abonnementen.

Lagere kosten
De groei in abonnementen zou te verklaren zijn door lage abonnementskosten van veel beschikbare sim-only-abonnementen, die bovendien vaak per maand opzegbaar zijn. Ook zijn in Nederland relatief veel mobiele aanbieders actief: in totaal ruim 60 op de netwerken van KPN, Vodafone, Tele2 en T-Mobile.

Het aantal abonnementen inclusief toestel bleef ondertussen nagenoeg op peil. Eind 2012 had 49 procent van de ondervraagden zo'n abonnement, in juni 2016 lag het aandeel op 46 procent.

Het onderzoek van Telecompaper loopt vanaf het derde kwartaal van 2012. Tussen dat moment en juni 2016 groeide het aantal sim-only abonnementen in Nederland van 24 naar 36 procent.
